In a claim before Judge Wheeler at the Hitchin County Court on Wednesday, Joseph Allison, harness-maker, of Walkern, said that he had given a local jobbing gardener named Cowley certain work to do in his garden and, as a result, he was alleging that Cowley had overcharged him and had also had damaged some Brussels sprouts and a strawberry bed.
Cowley, an old man, denied that he had damaged the strawberry bed, but said that he had pulled up some old greens and, on Mr Allison’s instructions, had given them to a lady for her chickens. He said that he had worked 15 hours for 7 shillings and 2 ounces of tobacco which had been given him.
The judge awarded Mr Allison one farthing in damages.
