Hertfordshire During the First World War Learning Resource

The resources have been brought together to give an insight into life in Hertfordshire during World War One and in particular how the police contributed to the war effort.   The aim is to enable students to understand how a national events impact on life at the local level and to challenge them to ask questions, think critically, weigh up evidence and build their own arguments.

The primary sources are taken from collections at Hertfordshire Archives Local Studies and Bishops Stortford Museum.  Many of the items are taken from a collection of wartime police records, which you can explore further here.

Most of the themes below are accompanied by graphic novels created by students from Middlesex University. These show how the sources can provide both historic and artistic inspiration.
