Theft from workmate

Hertfordshire Mercury, 13th February 1931

George H. J. Clarke , 20 , 33b Oakers Buildings , Hertford , was charged with stealing 5s. 6d. from a workmate’s coat , at Great Amwell , on February 5 . Defendant pleaded guilty.

Edward H. Tillbrook , Little Street , Nazeing , said he worked at the Concrete Utilities , Great Amwell , and on Thursday afternoon of last week he missed his coat containing 5s. 6d.

P.c. Percy  Godfrey , Stanstead Abbotts  , said he went to Hertford , and saw the defendant , who at first denied all knowledge of the theft , but after being cautioned and searched , he said ” I took it from the jacket pocket. ”  When charged at Ware Police Station , defendant said ,   ” I admit the charge . “

Previous convictions were proved against the defendant , and it was revealed that he was still under probation for an offence at Hertford .

Mr Andrews , Probation Officer , pleaded for the defendant , and he was placed on probation for two years . It was stated , that owing to the defendant having broken his recognisances  , and facts would have to be reported to the Justices at Hertford .
