Child offenders

Transcript

At Hertford Petty Sessions, in the Children’s Court, Lawrence Dempsey (14), Dennis Dempsey (12), and Charles Wyman (11), were charged with stealing growing apples, value 6d., the property of Mr Lewis A. Garratt, of Queen’s Road, Hertford, on August 19.

Evidence having been given by Mr H. Fentiman, PC Crisford, PS Palmer, and Mr G.S. Garratt, the bench fined each defendant 10 shillings, the Chairman saying that the police had received a great many complaints about apples being stolen.

George Suckling (9), and William Manser (9) were charged with stealing various small articles, value 6d., the property of the managers of the All Saints’ Girls School, Hertford, on August 16, and Suckling was further charged with stealing firewood, value 6d., from All Saints’ Infants School on August 19.

Evidence was given by Thomas Gleed, PS Palmer, H. Fentiman, and the cleaner of the school.  Suckling was ordered to receive four strokes of the birch and his parents were ordered to pay 10 shillings towards the costs, and Manser’s parents 5 shillings.
