Police History
Formal Policing in Hertfordshire, commenced in 1836, with the formation of both Hertford Borough Police and the St.Albans Borough Police (latterly St. Albans City Police).
The Hertfordshire Constabulary, was founded 5 years later in 1841 and covered the rest of the County, with the exception of Bushey, Radlett, Borehamwood, Potters Bar and Cheshunt, which came under the Metropolitan Police jurisdiction.
In 1889, Hertford Borough amalgamated with Hertfordshire, followed in 1947 by St.Albans City Police. The County Force took over the remaining Metropolitan Police Districts in 2000.
