The son of a Hertfordshire Police Sergeant who was a Royal Naval veteran of WW1, joined Herts Constabulary in 1937, joined the Special Investigation Branch as a photographer in 1942 and was discharged in 1945, re-joined Herts Constabulary and retired after 25 years.
Read more George Halsey left school at 15 and joined the Merchant Navy sailing the world. In 1936 at the age of 22 he joined Hertfordshire Constabulary. In May 1943 he joined the Royal Naval Reserve and served on Minesweepers at a Lieutenant. In December 1945 he re-joined the Police. He was commended several times retiring in 1966 as a Detective Inspector after 30 years service.

Surviving the war he joined the Hertfordshire Constabulary becoming one of the last Mounted Police Officers. He served for 38 years the last 21 at High Wych.

Read more From 1943 he served in the RAF as a Flight Engineer on a Lancaster bomber, shot down in 1944 whilst returning from a mission he evaded the Germans for 7 months until he was liberated by advancing Allied soldiers. After the war he served in both the Metropolitan and Nottingham City Police before transferring to Hertfordshire.

He was recalled to the Colours on 4th December 1899 for the Boer War but found to be unfit for service in South Africa. He re-joined the Police but then made a major error of judgement which saw him sent to prison. He later re-joined the Bedfordshire Regiment and served throughout WW1.

Having been sent to France his true age was revealed and he was sent back to the UK. He returned to France in 1918 where he was wounded and was awarded the Military Medal. After the War he joined the Police.

Constable Goodson was recalled to the Colours on 9th October 1899 and was Killed in Action at Belmont, South Africa on the 23rd November 1899.
