Having served as Bombardier 79907 in the Royal Artillery he joined the Hertford County Constabulary in 1898. Recalled to the Colours on 9th October 1899 he served for nearly two years in the Boer War before re-joining the Constabulary retiring in 1923 as a Superintendent.

Read more Having served as Private 3789 in the Bedfordshire Regiment he joined the Hertford County Constabulary in 1897. He was recalled to the Colours on 4th December 1899 for the Boer War but found to be unfit for service in South Africa. He re-joined the Police but then made a major error of judgement which saw him sent to prison. He later re-joined the Bedfordshire Regiment and served throughout WW1.

John Cross enlisted in the Army in 1915 as a Section B Army Reservist but was never mobilised his son Stanley also enlisted in 1915 as Guardsman 24497 in the Grenadier Guards aged 15. Having been sent to France his true age was revealed and he was sent back to the UK. He returned to France in 1918 where he was wounded and was awarded the Military Medal. After the War he joined the Police.

Constable Goodson was recalled to the Colours on 9th October 1899 and was Killed in Action at Belmont, South Africa on the 23rd November 1899.
