What a sauce ! - alleged theft of bottles from goods yard

Appearing at an Occasional Court at Bishop’s Stortford , on Saturday, Eric Arthur Catton , aged 26, of 275 London Road , Bishop’s Stortford ,was remanded on bail until March 1 on a charge of stealing a carton containing 36 bottles of sauce , valued at £2 and 5 shillings , at Bishop’s Stortford railway goods yard on Friday .

P.c. Chapman of the Railway Police , gave evidence that while on a round of inspection at the station late on Friday , he saw a man , whom he alleged to be Catton , carrying a package in his arms . When he shone his torch the man dropped his package and ran between some trucks .

Later that night , P.c. Chapman saw a man in Station Road and recognised him as the person he had seen earlier at the goods yard .

On being questioned , the man , who was Catton , said he had not been near the station , but had been down to the river .
