Theft of postage stamps

Transcript

At an occasional court at Welwyn on Monday morning, Charles Cuffley, aged 23, of 45 Bath Street, Northampton, was charged with stealing a quantity of postage stamps of the value of 1 shilling. from the safe of the office of Messrs Fenwick Owen and Sons, brickmakers, of Digswell Hill, Welwyn, on Saturday.

The defendant pleaded guilty.

P.C. Baker stated that he received information on Saturday evening that a robbery had taken place at Messrs Fenwick Owen’s office.

The witness went to Hatfield, where he found the defendant detained, and brought him to Welwyn Police Station.

When searched he had 1s ¼d. on him.

The defendant remarked: ‘I expect I shall get a month for this’.  The Magistrates remanded him in custody until Friday.
