Children stealing pears

Hertfordshire Mercury, 16th October 1915

Transcript

At the Children’s Court at Hertford Borough Sessions on Thursday Leonard and John Saggers, aged 11 and 9 years respectively, of Wellington Street, pleaded guilty to the theft of growing pears from the garden of Mr W. Hatton Ward, Mount Pleasant.

According to the information of PC Compton, stationed at Bengeo, the boys admitted to him that they raided the garden on two successive mornings.

The prosecutor, having regard to the fact that the mother had thrashed the boys and that the father was on active service, did not press the case, and the Bench inflicted no penalty, but placed the lads under the supervision of the probation officer.
