Damaging a chestnut tree

Hertfordshire Mercury, 24th November 1906

Transcript

Wllliam Humberstone and Walter Parfect of Amwell Street, Hoddesdon, were charged with doing wilful damage to a chestnut tree at Broxbournebury on October 17th.

Defendants failed to appear at the last Bench and now pleaded guilty.

P.C. Hawkins stated that he saw the defendants in Broxbournebury Park with another man, throwing up at a chestnut tree.

Mr G. M. Robertson, bailiff to Mr H. J. Smith-Bosanquet, said the damage done amounted to 2 shillings.

The Bench said that as the defendants did not appear on the first occasion, they would not be dealt with so easily as the one who appeared at the last Court and they would each have to pay a fine of 5 shillings, the damage and the costs.
