Theft doesn't pay

At Cheshunt Police Court, Edith Mansfield, a schoolgirl, of Shadbolts Yard, Hoddesdon, was charged on remand with stealing a purse, valued at 6d, containing 6s 6d in money and four halfpenny stamps, at Hoddesdon, on 1st January, 1914.

The Bench made an order that the child should be detained at a home near Bristol until she attained the age of 16 years, with the parents being ordered to pay 1 shilling a week towards her maintenance.
