Special Constable assaulted

Hertfordshire Mercury, 16th January 1915

Transcript

At Stevenage Petty sessions on Thursday, Reginald Brown, dealer, of Hitchin, was fined £1 10s. and 16 shillings costs for assaulting William John Green, a Special Constable, whilst in the execution of his duty at Walkern on December 28.

The evidence showed that the complainant was sent for by the licensee of the Robin Hood, and found the defendant trying to force an entrance to the house by the back door.  When he requested defendant to leave, Brown replied with an oath, and kicked him on the left leg and tripped him up.  Witness, however, managed to hold him down until assistance arrived.  Frank Brown, licensee of the Robin Hood, and half-brother to the defendant, said the latter knocked at the door and shouted ‘Come outside and I’ll finish you’.  Defendant said he had too much to drink, and didn’t know what he was doing, and he now apologized to Mr Green and his brother.
