Drunk in charge of a child

Hertfordshire Mercury, 17th July 1915

Transcript

At Hertford Borough Sessions, Jane Cockham, of Green Street, was summoned for being found drunk whilst in charge of a child under seven years of age on July 3.  P.S. Hadder said that at 9.30 p.m. on July 3 he saw the defendant in Maidenhead Street, with a child which had no slippers or socks on.  It was raining hard at the time.  The defendant staggered about and her husband tried to take the child from her but she would not let him.  She abused Inspector Melaniphy, of the N.S.P.C.C., and eventually went home with her husband, who told the witness later that the child was all right.  Fined 10 shillings, or seven days’ imprisonment.
