Woman cyclist's capers

Hertfordshire Mercury, 4th December 1915

At Cheshunt Petty Sessions on Wednesday, Annie Louisa Emmerson, of 4 Cross Road, Waltham Cross, was charged with being drunk and incapable at Waltham Cross on November 29.

P.C. McNally said that at 2.20 p.m. on Monday he was in Eleanor Road, when he saw the defendant riding a bicycle in a zig-zag fashion across the road.  She collided with a horse and van.  The witness went up to her, and found she was drunk.  He took her into custody, and she was seen by Dr Clark, who certified her drunk.  The defendant said she had a side-slip on her bicycle and fell to the ground.  She had only had one glass of beer that day.

Fined 10 shillings and 3s. 6d. doctor’s fee.
