Drunk in charge of a steam powered lorry

Hertfordshire Mercury, 31st October 1914

Transcript

At Stevenage Petty Sessions on Thursday last week, David William Perkins, of 22 Parkland Road, Bengeo, was charged with being drunk in charge of a steam motor lorry, at Stevenage, on the evening of 15th October.  He pleaded not guilty but the evidence showed that the lorry was so driven that it collided with a lamp-post, and that when seen by the police the defendant was so incapable as to warrant his detention.

The bench imposed a fine of £2, or 14 days’ imprisonment.  The defendant paid £1 and was allowed until Monday to pay the remainder.
