From 1943 he served in the RAF as a Flight Engineer on a Lancaster bomber, shot down in 1944 whilst returning from a mission he evaded the Germans for 7 months until he was liberated by advancing Allied soldiers. After the war he served in both the Metropolitan and Nottingham City Police before transferring to Hertfordshire.
