A drunken deserter

Hertfordshire Mercury, 14th August 1915

Pte. J. Whitaker of 3rd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, was charged before Mr W Burgess at Hertford police station on Wednesday morning with being drunk and disorderly on August 10th, 1915 and further with deserting from his regiment.

Apparently Whitaker wanted to fight Pc Starkey in Railway Street, but the Constable did not accept the challenge and took Whitaker to the police station.

No penalty was imposed in the first case, and the defendant was remanded to await an escort.
