Policeman injured by runaway horse

Hertfordshire Mercury, 5th May 1900

Transcript

A horse drawing a van belonging to Messrs McMullen & Son bolted in the Wash Hertford.   PC Wright tried to stop the horse but was dashed against the wall on Mill Bridge, although several vehicles crossing the bridge at the time managed to avoid a collision.

The horse continued its bolt along Old Cross towards Cowbridge but slipped and fell near the premises of Ekins & Co.

Two men attempted to restrain the horse but it managed to regain its footing and galloped towards the Great Northern Railway Station, where it was eventually brought to a halt in the goods yard.

The horse and van managed to escape serious injury.
