Keeping a dog without a licence

Hertfordshire Mercury, 4th September 1915

At Much Hadham Petty Sessions Lizzie Caine (47), of Bury Green, Little Hadham, was summoned for keeping a dog without a licence.  PC Gooch said that on August 21 at 1.30 p.m. he was at Bury Green and saw two dogs chained to kennels at the rear of the defendant’s house.  On inquiry the defendant stated one belonged to her son, for which she had a licence, and the other to herself, for which she had no licence; she was keeping it for a man from Bishop’s Stortford to whom she was going to sell it for 3 shillings.  The witness further stated that the defendant had had the dog twelve months.  Since his visit the dog had been destroyed.  The Chairman said there was no excuse, and the defendant must pay 7s. 6d..
