Austin A99 Area Cars

Brian Homans

Around 1959/1960, the Austin model A95 was superseded by the Austin A99 Westminster and these were adopted as Area Cars. I regularly drove one as a PC at Hemel Hempstead but the best picture I have is this one of the Bishops Stortford Area Car at the time, driven and photographed by my good friend, John Oliver (former PC 649).

When the Traffic Division was formed in 1962, some of these black Westminsters were taken from Area Car duties and sprayed white at HQ Garage for use as Traffic Cars. The instruction was given that Area Car drivers were not permitted to drive these white Traffic Cars, even though they may have previously driven them when they were black!
