Vanden Plas Princess 4 litre R - DAR 900F

Brian Homans

This luxury vehicle was a Headquarters Staff Car, seen here flying the penant of the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire. The car was based on the Austin A110/Wolseley 6/110 but fitted with a 3.9 litre Rolls Royce engine and automatic gearbox. This vehicle was later used by the Driving School and I drove it on my Advanced Driving Course under the direction of Peter Lander and Ben Price. Not many people can say that they did their driver training in a ‘Roller’ !

  • I drove the Roller whist stationed at H.Q.
Princess Margaret and Princess Anne, were conveyed, accompanied by Major General Sir George Burns on many occasions.
It was later used to convey the A.C.C’s, and the Deputy C.C. They found it too ostentatious, and the Garage found a Rover ex-Traffic, sprayed it brown. (Mexico Brownlow). Which was apt.
