At Cheshunt Petty Sessions, Harry Smith of Oxford was summoned for leaving a steam roller unattended on the highway at Hoddesdon on January 17th. The defendant declined to answer the summons and thus did not appear.
P.C. Robinson stated the facts of the case, and advised that the defendant had offered to treat him to a drink which, of course, he had refused. He added that the defendant had then offered him 5 shillings so as to “..square matters..”, but the Constable had again refused to accept the offer.
The Bench found the defendant guilty and he was sentenced to a fine of £2 or 25 days’ jail.
