In the photograph, which was  taken in 1919 at Police Headquarters at Hatfield, is the 15th Probationer Class who had as their Instructors Acting Sergeant Ethelbert Maskell and Constable 280 George Thomas Sharp.

General Order 162 of the 17th July 1919 announced that fifteen Recruit Constables having been brought on to the Roster, would be transferred from Headquarters to Divisions for duty. Those pictured are:

Back Row left to right:

  1. PC 169 William Edward Nottage was born on the 27th January 1892 and served between the 29th April 1919 and the 2nd May 1945. He was first posted to F Division at Hertford. He died on the 3rd January 1968.
  2. PC 92 Frederick Walter Currell was born on the 21st September 1898 and served between the 15th May 1919 and the 5th March 1947. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 28th October 1977.
  3. PC 50 Thomas Copeman was born on the 31st August 1894 and served between the 15th May 1919 and the 20th June 1945. He was first posted to A Division at Ware. He died on the 22nd November 1968.
  4. PC 157 Arthur Mays was born on the 6th March 1893 and served between the 20th June 1919 and the 20th June 1945. He was first posted to B Division at Bishops Stortford. He died on the 26th October 1961.

  1. PC 162 Joshua Medcalf was born on the 9th January 1898 and served between the 15th May 1919 and the 31st December 1945. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 1st September 1969.
  2. PC 172 Stanley Ernest Wood was born on the 30th January 1893 and served between the 28th April 1919 and 31st May 1949. He was first posted to A Division at Ware. He died on the 2nd June 1969.
  3. PC 62 Stanley Jack Cross was born on the 9th April 1900 and served between the 28th April 1919 and the 8th April 1946. He was first posted to G Division at Hatfield. He died on the 16th December 1985.
  4. PC 147 John Jackson was born on the 8th April 1898 and served between the 28th April 1919 and the 18th October 1944. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 27th March 1972.
  5. PC 158 James Lee was born on the 30th December 1891 and served between the 28th April 1919 and the 27th April 1944. He was first posted to F Division at Hertford. He died on the 1st January 1966.
  6. PC 43 Walter Barker was born on the 18th September 1893 and served between 19th May 1919 and the 20th June 1945. He was first posted to G Division at Harpenden. He died on the 22nd May 1969.
  7. PC 175 Herbert James Woolmore was born on the 6th April 1898 and served until the 21st February 1945. He was first posted to E Division at Hitchin. He died on the 15th June 1976.
  8. PC 168 Tom Martin was born on the 1st April 1893 and served between the 10th May 1919 and the 10th May 1944. He was first posted to G Division at Harpenden. He died in 1971.
  9. PC 47 Frank Catlin was born on the 19th May 1893 and served between the 28th April 1919 and the 27th April 1949. He was first posted to E Division at Hitchin. He died on the 20th July 1951.

Front Row left to right:

  1. PC 171 Ismael Arthur Poll was born on the 29th March 1895 and served between the 28th April 1919 and 31st December 1945. He was first posted to A Division at Hoddesdon. He died on the 6th August 1988.
  2. Instructor Acting Sergeant 161 Ethelbert Maskell.
  3. Instructor Constable 280 George Thomas Sharp.
  4. PC 33 Percy Alfred Anderson served between the 28th April 1919 and 1922. He was first posted to R Division at Headquarters.
