In the photograph, which was  taken in 1919 at Police Headquarters at Hatfield, is the 14th Probationer Class who had as their Instructors Acting Sergeant Ethelbert Maskell and Constable 280 George Thomas Sharp (not pictured).

General Order 109 of the 12th May 1919 announced that ten Recruit Constables having been brought on to the Roster, would be transferred from Headquarters to Divisions for duty. Those pictured are:

Back Row left to right:

1.    PC 151 Herbert George Searle was born on the 29th November 1896 and served between the 10th March 1919 and the 6th February 1920. He was first posted to E Division at Hitchin. He died in 1972.

2.    PC 145 Percy George Botterill was born on the 15th September 1893 and served between the 10th March 1919 and the 26th February 1947. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 10th January 1977.

3.    PC 116 Edward George Pavitt was born on the 27th June 1891 and served between the 10th March 1919 and the 6th November 1946. He was first posted to G Division at Harpenden. He died in 1965.

4.    PC 38 Cyril Freeman served between the 10th March 1919 and the 17th September 1919. He was first posted to D Division at Hemel Hempstead.

5.    PC 66 Harry Smith was born on the 9th September 1898 and served between the 14th March 1919 and the 8th September 1958. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 25th January 1981.

1.    PC 30 Cyril John Easton was born on the 8th August 1896 and served between the 10th March 1919 and the 4th February 1920. He was first posted to E Division at Hitchin. It is believed he then joined Essex Police. He died in 1972.

2.    PC 112 William Henry Dickinson was born on the 23rd April 1897 and served between the 20th March 1919 and the 31st December 1959. He was first posted to E Division at Letchworth. He died on the 14th August 1984.

3.    PC 78 Ernest William Phypers was born on the 19th November 1895 and served between the 10th March 1919 and the 31st December 1950. He was first posted to R Division at Headquarters. He died on the 1st June 1971.

4.    Instructor Acting Sergeant 161 Ethelbert Maskell.

5.    PC 52 Leonard Howard was born on the 8th February 1891 and served between the 22nd July 1914 and the 21st July 1939. He was first posted to A Division at Ware. He died on the 27th August 1939.

6.    PC 18 Alfred Archer Hulls was born on the 20th December 1894 and served between the 10th March 1919 and the 15th October 1919. He was first posted to G Division at Hatfield. He died on the 14th July 1974 in the U.S.A.
