In the photograph, which was taken in 1921 at Police Headquarters at Hatfield, is the 23rd Probationer Class who had as their Instructors Sergeant 280 George Thomas Sharp and Constable PC 268 Arthur James Saunders.
Curiously a second photograph of the same group, posing in the same positions, but with a different background was also taken and a copy has been posted on this site by a relative of PC Stilton.
General Orders 191 of the 25th November 1921, 195 of the 6th December 1922 PC’s Martin and Thompson) and 11 of the 17th January 1922 (PC Miles) announced that ten Recruit Constables having been brought on to the Roster, would be transferred from Headquarters to Divisions for duty. Those pictured are:

1. PC 110 George Brain was born on the 7th July 1895 and served between the 2nd August 1921 and the 6th July 1956. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 23rd October 1978.
2. PC 348 Henry James Thompson was born in 1898 and served between the 2nd August 1921 and the 25th November 1929. He was first posted to F Division at Welwyn. He died in 1929.
3. PC 349 George Southwell Wyman was born on the 26th January 1898 and served between the 2nd August 1921 and the 1st August 1947. He was first posted to F Division at Hertford. He died on the 22nd August 1972.
4. PC 141 William Charles Butcher was born on the 10th December 1900 and served between the 2nd August 1921 and the 2nd August 1953. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died in 1975.
5. PC 341 Charlie Reed was born on the 19th March 1893 and served between the 2nd August 1921 and the 31st March 1947. He was first posted to D Division at Hemel Hempstead. He died in 1969.
6. PC 346 William Richard Stilton was born on the 26th July 1899 and served between the 2nd August 1921 and the 1st August 1946. He was first posted to E Division at Hitchin. He died in 1974.
7. PC 245 George Walter Martin was born on the 22nd November 1899 and served between the 2nd August 1921 and the 18th March 1953. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died in 1961.

4. PC 322 Ernest Miles was born on the 3rd December 1896 and served between the 2nd August 1921 and the 12th December 1946. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 18th October 1966. (He also appears in the photograph of Class 24).
5. PC 164 Stanley Hayward was born on the 20th June 1894 and served between the 2nd August 1921 and the 1st August 1946. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 25th February 1972.
