In the photograph, which was taken in 1927 at Police Headquarters at Hatfield, is the 38th Probationer Class who had as their Instructors Inspector George Thomas Sharp and Sergeant 41 William Stanley Flower.

No General Orders have survived for this period and of the nine new recruits it has only been possible to identify seven of them. Of these only PC Sale’s pension record has survived. His record is endorsed that he was in the 38th Class. Those pictured are:

Back Row left to right:

  1. PC 86 Ernest William Izzard was born on the 26th September 1907 and served between the 3rd March 1927 and the 1st April 1945. He died in 1992.
  2. PC 99 Ronald Frederick Matravers was born on the 15th April 1907 and served between the 3rd March 1927 and the 3rd July 1952. He died on the 7th November 1974.
  3. PC 21 Edwin George Bailey served between the 3rd March 1927 and the 21st December 1927.
  4. PC 74 Herbert George Harding was born in 1906 and served between the 3rd March 1927 and the 2nd August 1930. He died in 1930.
  5. PC 113 Jack Pearman was born on the 3rd April 1904 and served between the 3rd March 1927 and the 19th September 1956. He died on the 6th January 1980.
  6. PC 185 William George Sales was born on the 1st April 1904 and served between the 3rd March 1927 and the 14th October 1952. He died on the 6th January 1987.

  4. PC 25 Frederick George Abbott Goddard was born on the 26th December 1903 and served between the 3rd March 1927 and the 1st April 1945. He died in 1983.
  5. PC 132 Unknown Constable.
