In the photograph, which was  taken in 1919 at Police Headquarters at Hatfield, is the 16th Probationer Class who had as their Instructors Acting Sergeant 161 Ethelbert Maskell and Constable 280 George Thomas Sharp.

General Order 216 of the 18th October 1919 announced that fifteen Recruit Constables having been brought on to the Roster, would be transferred from Headquarters to Divisions for duty. General Order 230 of the 20th November and General Order 244 of the 9th December 1919 similarly announced that PC Ives and PC Wiggs, respectively, had been brought onto the Roster and posted as shown. Back Row left to right:

  1. PC 253 George Hemmings was born on the 19th October 1894 and served between the 21st July 1919 and the 31st August 1946. He was first posted to E Division at Stevenage. He died on the 19th October 1979.
  2. PC 233 Arthur Howe was born on the 11th January 1894 and served between the 21st July 1919 and the 22nd August 1945. He was first posted to F Division at Hertford. He died on the 18th July 1965.
  3. PC 188 Reginald Henry Wiggs who served between 1919 and 1931. He was first posted to R Division at Headquarters.
  4. PC 231 Joseph Hales served from 1919 until 23rd March 1921. He was first posted to B Division at Bishops Stortford.
  5. PC 318 Alexander Williams served from 1919 until 4th February 1929. He was first posted to A Division at Stansted Abbots.

Middle Row left to right:

  1. PC 319 William Henry Whyman was born on the 25th June 1894 and served between the 21st July 1919 and 28th September 1949. He was first posted to B Division at Bishops Stortford. He died on the 15th December 1892.
  2. PC 181 Harold Calcutt was born on the 29th October 1898 and served between the 21st July 1919 and the 1st September 1952. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 15th August 1974.
  3. PC 173 John William Berry was born on the 10th June 1897 and served between the 21st July 1919 and the 7th October 1950. He was first posted to D Division at Hemel Hempstead. He died on the 23rd September 1989.
  4. PC 283 George Alfred Voller was born on the 11th September 1892 and served between the 21st July 1919 and the 7th February 1952. He was first posted to F Division at Hertford. He died on the 7th October 1976.
  5. PC 155 Frank Bavister was born on the 10th April 1896 and served between the 21st July 1919 and the 30th September 1953. He was first posted to C Division at Chorley Wood. He died on the 13th August 1975.
  6. PC 206 Jack Hales was born on 13th March 1896 and served between the 21st July 1919 and the 30th September 1952. He was first posted to A Division at Hoddesdon. He died in 1966.
  7. PC 98 Harry Bateman was born on the 22nd March 1895 and served between the 21st July 1919 and the 21st August 1947. He was first posted to G Division at Hatfield. He died in 1972.

  1. PC 218 Robert Charles Offord was born on the 30th June 1899 and served between the 7th August 1919 and the 31st March 1946. He was first posted to A Division at Hoddesdon. He died on the 2nd August 1970.
  2. PC 309 F. White served between 1919 and 1921 and was first posted to C Division at Watford.
  3. Instructor Acting Sergeant 161 Ethelbert Maskell.
  4. Instructor Constable 280 George Thomas Sharp.
  5. PC 268 Arthur James Saunders was born on the 3rd June 1894 and served between the 21st July 1919 and the 31st December 1943. He was first posted to D Division at Great Berkhamsted. He later became an Instructor. He died on the 18th December 1966.
  6. PC 257 Alfred James Ives was born on the 5th May 1895 and served between the 21st July 1919 and the 26th October 1932. He was first posted to G Division at Harpenden. He died on the 23rd December 1969.
