Gaming with cards

Hertfordshire Mercury, 20th February 1915

Transcript

At Welwyn Petty Sessions, Herbert Draper, Sidney Harris, and Arthur Smith, all lads residing at Potter’s Heath, pleaded guilty to a charge of gaming with cards and coins on the public highway at Codicote on January 24.  P.C. Day, of Codicote, stated that on the date named he was on duty near Nup End, when he saw the three defendants playing cards.  He told them he should report them, and they told him they were only playing for packets of fags.  The Chairman told them that they would have been better employed if they had enlisted.  The case was dismissed after a caution to the defendants as to their future conduct.
