Amwell Crossroads lorry fire

John Weeks

On 25th April 1969 a lorry travelling along the A414 was about to cross the A10 at Amwell Crossroads (long since replaced by a roundabout) when it caught fire. Being the morning rush hour this caused absolute chaos. The fire brigade attended and extinguished the fire but I still reeked of smoke when, less than an hour later, I appeared before a promotion board !
