Probationers February 1924
Herts Police Historical Society

In the photograph, which was probably taken in late 1923 or early 1924 at Police Headquarters at Hatfield, is a Probationer Class who had as their Instructor Sergeant 280 George Thomas Sharp.

General Order 20 of the 1st February 1924 announced that four Recruit Constables (Scott, Rose, Wagstaff & Plested) and General Order 23 of the 12th February 1924 announced that two Recruit Constables (Hilton & Prior), having been brought on to the Roster, would be transferred from Headquarters to Divisions for duty. Those pictured are:

Back Row left to right:

1.    PC 258 George Hilton was born on the 21st March 1898 and served between the 25th September 1923 and the 25th July 1951. He was first posted to G Division at Harpenden. He died in 1973.

2.    PC 228 Horace Charles Prior was born on the 14th July 1899 and served between the 25th September 1923 and the 14th March 1955. He was first posted to E Division at Hitchin. He died on the 10th November 1995.

3.    PC 160 Leonard William Scott was born on the 21st November 1898 and served between the 25th September 1923 and the 24th September 1963. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died in 1978.

4.    PC 217 A. Rose has not been identified further. Based on the fact his colleagues all joined on the same date it is safe to assume that he too served from the 25th September 1923. He was first posted to D Division at Hemel Hempstead. However, as his Warrant Number was given to PC 217 Frederick Charles Foxon on the 4th June 1928 he must have left the Constabulary before that date.

Front Row left to right:

1.    PC 117 Cecil Arthur Wagstaff was born on the 3rd January 1903 and served between the 25th September 1923 and the 3rd August 1954. He was first posted to C Division at Rickmansworth. He died in 1990.

2.    Instructor Sergeant 280 George Thomas Sharp.

3.    PC 238 Alfred Plested was born on the 16th December 1898 and served between the 25th September 1923 and the 12th April 1950. He was first posted to E Division at Hitchin. He died in 1983.
