In the photograph, which was  taken in 1920 at Police Headquarters at Hatfield, is a Probationer Class who had as their Instructor Acting Sergeant 280 George Thomas Sharp.

General Order 95 of the 20th May 1920 announced that six Recruit Constables, (Pegram, Burgess, Allen, Kimpton, Martin and Lewis), and General Order 100 of the 1st June 1920 also announced that a further six Recruit Constables, (Whittenham, Payne, Marden, Lawrence, Whyman and Finch), all having been brought on to the Roster, would be transferred from Headquarters to Divisions for duty. Those pictured are:

Back Row left to right:

1.    PC 32 Thomas Robert Finch was born on the 13th June 1895 and is believed to have served between the 23rd February 1920 and 1926. He was first posted to B Division at Hertford. He died on the 7th June 1956. General Order 100 shows him as PC 72 but this is believed to be an error as he has 32 on his collar and subsequent Orders show him as 32.

2.    PC 8 Bertie Allen was born on the 26th January 1897 and served between the 23rd February 1920 and the 14th October 1943. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 25th June 1977.

3.    PC 263 James Pegram was born on the 25th April 1897 and served between and the 23rd February 1920 7th April 1954. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died in 1977.

4.    PC 100 Henry William Martin was born on the 4th October 1898 and served between the 23rd February 1920 and the 22nd February 1950. He was first posted to E Division at Hitchin. He is believed to have died in 1973.

5.    PC 61 Reginald Burgess was born on the 15th November 1899 and served between the 23rd February 1920 and the 20th January 1960. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died in 1977.

6.    PC 170 L. A. F. (possibly Leonard Arthur Frank) Lawrence and is believed to have served between the 23rd February 1920 and no later than the 4th October 1920 (170 was then given to PC Robert Henley Thetford from that date). He was first posted to D Division at Hemel Hempstead.

7.    PC 304 George Albert Whyman was born on the 27th May 1898 and is believed to have served between the 23rd February 1920 and into the early 1930’s. He was first posted to E Division at Hitchin. He died in 1933.

8.    PC 238 George Lewis was born on the 8th March 1894 and is believed to have served between the 23rd February 1920 until he resigned in May 1923. He was first posted to E Division at Hitchin.

Front Row left to right:

1.    PC 310 Leonard William Whittenham was born on the 12th January 1897 an served between the 23rd February 1920 and the 11th January 1962. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 4th November 1980.

2.    PC 151 Richard Leonard Marden was born on the 14th April 1895 and is believed to have served between the 23rd February 1920 and the mid 1930’s. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 13th May 1937.

3.    Instructor Acting Sergeant 280 George Thomas Sharp.

4.    PC 331 George Isaac William Kimpton was born on the 11th January 1894  and he served between the 11th November 1914 and the 11th November 1943. His training was interrupted by his Military Service in WW1. He was first posted to C Division at Watford. He died on the 20th January 1972.

5.    PC 248 Horace Payne was born on the 22nd July 1892 and served between the 23rd February 1920 and the 27th November 1949. He was first posted to C Division at Rickmansworth. He died on the 6th March 1984.
