Suicide of a farm worker

Hertfordshire Mercury, 8th June 1918

Transcript

James Shepherd (37), married, farm foreman for Mr A. Oliver of Nettleswell House, Bishop’s Stortford, at his off-hand farm at White Roding, was found dead in his cottage on Saturday with his throat cut.

At the inquest on Monday, evidence was given that the deceased came from Taunton, Somerset, on March 29th last to work for Mr Oliver.  His wife had been in ill health and this greatly worried him and caused him to be depressed.  At 3:30pm on Saturday afternoon he was found with his throat cut, and Police Constable Fisher, who was called, ascertained that he was quite dead.

The jury returned a verdict that the deceased had committed suicide but was not accountable for his actions, and expressed sympathy with the widow.
