Bristol, John

by John Winchester, Berkhamstead 1597

Nik Pringle

Two married women were acquitted of being accessories before the fact in a particularly revolting murder in Berkhamsted in 1597.  John Winchester, a yeoman, was hung for killing John Bristol, a local gentleman by forcing a sheathed Knife down his Throat.  Bristol’s wife was one of the two women acquitted.
