Food and Farming

When war broke out importing food became more difficult and there was concern that there would not be enough to eat.  Food prices soared and there were even food riots.  By 1917, one in four ships carrying food was sunk by German submarines and in 1918 rationing became compulsory and everyone at home did what they could to grow their own food.

    William E. Allen was summoned for extensive food hoarding, and the excuse that his boys should have biscuits on their return to Eton did not influence the Bench. Very substantial fines followed.
