For King and Country

In the summer of 1914, there was great support and enthusiasm for the war.  It was thought to be your patriotic duty to serve your country.   The government used this idea in its propaganda and recruitment campaigns.  However, by the end of 1915 well over 500,000  men had been killed, wounded or were missing.  The supply of volunteers dried up and in 1916, conscription was introduced.
