Following a chance meeting with Brian Burch of Hertford, I have enjoyed the privilege of having access to his collection of mementos of his of his late father, who served with distinction in the Hertfordshire Yeomanry during the First World War.
Living and working in Hertford, he had already joined the Territorial Army when war broke out in 1914. Serving in the trenches in France as a machine gunner he rose in the ranks to become a Company Sergeant Major, after receiving a serious wound at Messines Ridge in June 1917. His war service continued after hospital treatment when he was retained in the U.K. as a Warrant Officer in charge of training machine gunners for the British Army.
