Transcript

At Stevenage Sessions, Benjamin Walby of High Street, Codicote, was fined 10 shillings for a breach of the lighting regulations in regard to a motor-cycle, at Watton, on 1st October.

Herbert Bonnet, a Special Constable, said that he had called upon the defendant to stop on the night of an air raid, his front lamp having been seen 100 yards away, but Mr Walby had run into the witness knocking him down.  The defendant said that he had not heard the Special Constable because of the noise of his motor-cycle.  He said that he had tried to swerve away from the Constable but had been too late.

The Bench held that the man who would tackle a running motor-cycle, on a dark night, was deserving of something approaching the VC.
