Where in Ware ?

At Ware Police Court, on the Monday morning, Joseph Waller, of Ware, was charged with behaving in a disorderly manner at the Ware Union Workhouse.

William J. Batchelor, porter, said that the defendant came to the gate and, when making use of extremely bad language, the defendant had said that he would not be admitted by anyone other than the proper person. Furthermore, he had threatened the man on duty at the gate and, as the witness was afraid that the defendant might hit the man on duty, he caught hold of Waller to prevent him attacking the gate-keeper.  The Master sent for the police who then took Waller into custody.

The Chairman, in sentencing the defendant, said that he had a bad record, and was a disgrace to both the town of Ware and to himself.  He could not understand how a man of his strength could be applying for admittance when he was able-bodied and fit for work.  He would have to go to prison for 3 weeks with hard labour.
