At Hertford County Sessions, Arthur Dolling (19), was charged with being a deserter from the Royal Horse Artillery.
Police Sergeant Palmer stated that the prisoner was scheduled in the Police Gazette as a deserter and, on hearing that he was staying with some relatives at Stapleford, he went in search of him and found him lying in a cornfield. The prisoner admitted that he had been at Stapleford with his relatives since he had deserted from L Battery at Aldershot on 4th July.
The Bench remanded him in custody to await an escort from his regiment, which arrived later the same day.
