Acting Sergt.-Major Thomas Hammond, 6th Essex Regiment, late of Bishop’s Stortford, pleaded guilty at Southend on Friday to charges of receiving £24 and £1, contrary to the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1906. The accused said the money was given to him as ‘lucky money’ following the usual custom. He had a long career in the Army, having served through the South African War and in Nigeria. He had the King’s and the Queen’s medals for the former, and also held the distinguished service and good conduct medals. The Bench fined him £20 in each case, £40 in all.
