A naval deserter

Hertfordshire Mercury, 26th June 1915

At Ware Petty Sessions on Tuesday James O’Reilly, aged 22, was charged with being a deserter from the Navy.  P.C. Morley said he saw the defendant at Standon about 2.15 a.m., on June 22.  He asked him what he was doing out at that time in the morning, and he replied: ‘I am a deserter from the Navy. From Crystal Palace, London.  In answer to the clerk, the defendant said he had walked from Crystal Palace.  He had no friends in the district and did not know where he was.  The Chairman said the defendant would be remanded to await an escort, and he said he was sorry that anyone who was serving the King should desert at such a time as this.
