Having served as Sergeant 8499 in the Coldstream Guards he joined the Hertford County Constabulary in 1898. He was recalled to the Colours on 9th October 1899 and fought throughout the Boer War. He re-joined the Police and retired as a Constable.

Read more Joining the Hertford County Constabulary in 1911 he was recalled to the Colours on the 4th August 1914 re-joining the Suffolk Regiment. Wounded in the hand he was discharged from the Army and re-joined the Police in December 1914. He retired in 1936.
Read more From 1943 he served in the RAF as a Flight Engineer on a Lancaster bomber, shot down in 1944 whilst returning from a mission he evaded the Germans for 7 months until he was liberated by advancing Allied soldiers. After the war he served in both the Metropolitan and Nottingham City Police before transferring to Hertfordshire.
