Opening of Baldock Police Station

Opening of Baldock Police Station

My father, Dennis Leaney (PC387) was demobbed from the Parachute Regiment in 1947 and joined Hertfordshire Constabulary.

On passing out in February 1948, he was posted to Welwyn Garden City.

On 5 March 1949 Dennis married Freda Collins in Burgess Hill and they moved to Baldock, Hertfordshire.

He later lived in Weston before being moved to Wheathampstead and Hemel Hempstead before ending up as Sergeant at Buntingford before his death in 1971.

My mum has a few photos of him in uniform on various occasions plus an article she wrote for the Buntingford Journal which I will try and get to you but one of the most interesting (considering its recent closure and demolition) is a photo taken at the opening of Baldock Police Station.

In the attached photo (from left to right) are :

Norman Wilkins
Dennis Leaney
Dave Winton
Arthur Kitchener
Chief Constable Wilcox
Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire (Sir David Bowes-Lyon)

I hope this is of interest.

Best wishes

Nigel Leaney

P.S. I was also thrilled to find a photo of my Uncle, George Hill in your archives too!

  • Thanks for sharing your photographs of the opening of Baldock Police Station.
My father PC 268 Tom Walker was stationed there for a while after being the village bobby at Weston for 10 years.
When he died, in 2014, his coffin was walked from St Mary’s church and up Baldock High Street as far as the police station as a mark of respect.
