In 1916 you could have been imprisoned for refusing to join the military – the men who stood on their consciences  suffered terribly, but their stories provide a fascinating insight into the mood of the time and the bravery of those who went against it.

During WW1 thousands of homes billeted soldiers.  Men from different areas of the country descended on small communities and changed their lives completely.
