Read more Joining the Hertford County Constabulary in 1911 he was recalled to the Colours on the 4th August 1914 re-joining the Suffolk Regiment. Wounded in the hand he was discharged from the Army and re-joined the Police in December 1914. He retired in 1936.
Read more From 1943 he served in the RAF as a Flight Engineer on a Lancaster bomber, shot down in 1944 whilst returning from a mission he evaded the Germans for 7 months until he was liberated by advancing Allied soldiers. After the war he served in both the Metropolitan and Nottingham City Police before transferring to Hertfordshire.

Surviving the war he joined the Hertfordshire Constabulary becoming one of the last Mounted Police Officers. He served for 38 years the last 21 at High Wych.
