These are the Life Stories of Serving Police Officers who were also Reservists who were either recalled to the Colours or who volunteered.

    Cannon, Edward John, 52, Constable
    Having joined Hertfordshire Constabulary in 1939 he enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Regulating Petty Officer in 1942 and served until 1946. he then returned to the Constabulary and completed his 30 years service.

    Halsey, George Anthony, 16, Constable, Sergeant, Detective Inspector
    George Halsey left school at 15 and joined the Merchant Navy sailing the world. In 1936 at the age of 22 he joined Hertfordshire Constabulary. In May 1943 he joined the Royal Naval Reserve and served on Minesweepers at a Lieutenant. In December 1945 he re-joined the Police. He was commended several times retiring in 1966 as a Detective Inspector after 30 years service.

    A Braughing man who became an Oxhey Police Officer who served in the Army in World War Two.

  • Phillips, Frederick William, 83, Constable
    Phillips, Frederick William, 83, Constable
    He enlisted in the Grenadier Guards in 1935 and served until 1939 when he joined Hertfordshire Constabulary. On the outbreak of WW2 he was recalled to the Colours serving with the 2nd Battalion until 1945. He was wounded once. He re-joined Hertfordshire Constabulary and served 25 years.

    The son of a Hertfordshire Police Sergeant who was a Royal Naval veteran of WW1, joined Herts Constabulary in 1937, joined the Special Investigation Branch as a photographer in 1942 and was discharged in 1945, re-joined Herts Constabulary and retired after 25 years.

    The son of a Hertfordshire Police Sergeant who was a Royal Naval veteran of WW1, joined Herts Constabulary in 1937, joined the Royal Signals in 1942 and was discharged in 1946, re-joined Herts Constabulary and retired after 30 years.

    Seymour, Alec, 66, Constable
    He joined the Hertfordshire Constabulary in 1939 and then enlisted in the RAF in 1942. He then transferred to the Royal Navy and was demobilised in 1945. He re-joined the Police before retiring after 30 year's service in 1969.

    Joining Hertfordshire Constabulary in 1939 he enlisted in the Royal Armoured Corps in 1942. He was wounded in February1945 and discharged from the Army in December 1945. He then re-joined the Police and retired after 25 years in 1964.

    Welch, Stanley Walter. 42, Constable, Sergeant
    He joined Hertfordshire Constabulary in 1939 then enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1942 serving until 1945 whereupon he re-joined the Constabulary and promoted Sergeant before retiring after 25 year's service.

    West, Denis Armitage, 274 or 991, Constable, Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector, Superintendent, Chief Superintendent
    He joined Hertfordshire Constabulary in 1937 and following the outbreak of WW2 enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry, rising to the rank of Major. After being demobilised he re-joined Hertfordshire Constabulary and retired in 1969 as a Chief Superintendent.

    Wilson, Frederick James, 90, Constable
    At 19 years old he joined the Coldstream Guards in 1932 and served for 4 years until 1936. He joined Hertfordshire Constabulary in 1937 and on the outbreak of WW2 in 1939, as a reservist, he was recalled to the colours. He was compulsorily transferred to the Corps of the Military Police and served in the Middle East until 1945, reaching the rank of Sergeant. On leaving the Army he re-joined Hertfordshire Constabulary but was forced to retire on medical grounds in 1950. He died in 1950 aged 37.
