The Great War

This category contains the Life Stories of those individual Hertfordshire Police Officers who were serving in the Hertford County Constabulary prior to the outbreak of the war or who joined the Constabulary during the war and were either reservists who were recalled to the colours or who volunteered for military service.

They were identified from a number of sources, principally the archives of the Hertfordshire Police Historical Society and HALS (Hertfordshire Archive and Local Studies). Additional information was sourced from Ancestry.co.uk, FindMyPast.co.uk, Forces-War-Records.co.uk, The Commonwealth War Graves Commission cwgc.org, the General Record Office gro.gov.uk. and Herts At War (hertsatwar.co.uk.)

All the following have contributed in some way into the research that forms the basis for these Life Stories: Nik Pringle, Neil Hamilton, Kitty Moores, Colin Chambers, Clive Harrison, Rudi Newman, Mick Hall, Terry Cox, Elaine Beard, Terry Pankhurst and Paul Johnson.

Where relatives of officers contributed to their story then they are attributed on an individual basis.

Should anyone have any further information regarding any of the individuals please add a comment on the story of the individual concerned.
