Theft Of Beef - Continued
From: Officer's Journal; PC Joseph SmithPC Smith was informed about the theft of piece of beef from a van whilst it was in London Road between Sawbridgeworth and Harlow. A suspect was named as William Cowland age 24 years of Sawbridgeworth by his employer Samuel Herbert Johnson of Bishops Stortford. Another man was seen to be in charge of a hay cart which was holding the meat as it was being cut. PC Smith went with Mr Johnson to the Blacking Lion Public House Epping to ascertain the name of the other man. From enquiries he was identified as Frederick Smart a Hay Carter of Shearing Essex.
