From: Officer's Journal; PC Joseph SmithPC Smith appeared at Bishops Stortford Petty Sessions held at the Corn Exchange before F Vander – Meulen and J A Houblon Magistrates with Thomas Cheer charged by Inspector Clark of the Great Eastern Railway with travelling by train from Cambridge to Bishops Stortford without a ticket and in default of payment of 25 shillings. Sentenced to one months imprisonment at Cambridge gaol.
