Copy of Memo From west Suffolk Constabulary, Newmarket, dated 24th August. Stolen from a cottage in Newmarket between 11pm and 6am 24th August 1902. A gent’s pneumatic safety bicycle, description: Singer Patent 26 inch frame, black enamelled Dunlop tyres, front tyre new, geared to about 60, brooks saddle, brown lamp attached, red glass one side of lamp cracked. Value £4. Two stable apprentices are suspected of stealing the above machine as it was found that they had absconded when the machine was missed about 6 am today. Description (1) Alfred Iles, age 17 to 18 years, height 4 feet 10 inch, dark hair, delicate experience, very excitable. Dressed in old brown suit & cap. (2) John Crochburn, age 17 to 18 ys., height 5ft 1in, brown hair, sallow complexion. Dressed good green breeches suit, drab cashmere leggings & cap, own name on clothes, native of Edinburgh. These lads have no money & will probably try to dispose of the bicycle & seek employment in racing stables. They spoke of going to Chantilly. Please cause inquiry to be made & if found detain & wire, or any information obtained communicate with Henry Gobbett, Inspector.Police officer
